There’s so much to learn from volunteering. Everyone, while in college or in their late teens, twenties, or early-thirties, should consider setting apart a year wherein they do nothing but volunteer and travel the world. It would be like hitting two birds with one stone -- you get to explore the world, learn about new cultures, and help make the world a better place. If you would like to live for a few months in India and see the culture first hand then you should consider becoming a volunteer at a non-profit NGO like Saving Children in Poverty. Let’s look at a few best GDP projects they run: SCIP ECO (Equality, Compassion, Opportunity) School “A child without education is like a bird without wings.” - Tibetan proverb If you want to help underprivileged children learn and access the wonders of knowledge, you can consider volunteering at the SCIP ECO School. It has six classes -- playgroup, lower kindergarten, upper kindergarten, first, second, and third grades. You can help to educate the children by sharing your knowledge in math, science, English, and other subjects. 10 children are sponsored every year for further education at the Nehru Academy School. The school is constantly working at full capacity and has to send away new admission inquiries because they don’t have resources. So, when you volunteer with this NGO, you can help them to expand their operations by making sure you can reach as many kids as possible and do good in the world. SCIP Medical Clinic “Healthcare must be recognised as a right, not a privilege.” - Bernie Sanders Many people who live in the Sector-Four slum of Faridabad, India didn’t have access to basic healthcare. So, the Saving Children in Poverty’s founder and director, Frances Allan collaborated with a local Indian doctor Vishy Bandhu. Together, they opened the SCIP Medical Clinic, which now provides free, quality, and accessible healthcare to the people in the slum. On a regular basis, they engross in referral work for high-risk and low-risk pregnancy cases, where the women are provided with necessary care, supervision, medicines, and if the complications are too much then they are referred to a nearby government hospital. The clinic also organises free medical eye check-up camp for the kids in the slum. Regular first-aid training sessions are conducted so that the women and children that live in the slum are self-sufficient in case of small medical emergencies. SCIP SEWS “Behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women, who have her back.” The women who came to drop off their kids at the SCIP ECO School also wanted to learn! When they approached the Saving Children in Poverty NGO, the director and founder, Frances Allan, came up with an ingenious plan so that the women could learn something that would help them to support themselves. And thus SCIP SEWS was born to create jobs for the motivated women. Two tailors were hired to teach them how to sew and stitch and today they are doing remarkable work day in and day out. 100% of the profits generated go back to the community and the women so that they can support their families. You can help by volunteering to expand the reach of SCIP SEWS -- an ethical shopping brand -- globally. Stay tuned as the women are currently working on Fall 2018 collection, which will be out soon. Before this, they designed the SCIP ECO School’s new school uniforms.
